Bald Ridge Creek Campground

The “adventure” to Cumming GA from Tifton was more than we bargained for. Traffic waylaid us for at least an hour going through McDonough – we were totally stopped for over an hour. Never did figure out what caused the delay, but we did finally get off I-675 and wound our way through suburban streets. Don’t know if that saved ANY time, but it felt good to move!!

So we are still learning the “rules” about motorhomes and when to get fuel. We have ruled out going to normal gas stations due to our size and towing a vehicle. So that limits us to Truck Stops. Surprisingly, there are few truck stops around Atlanta. Long story short, we had to drive an extra 45 minutes each way to find one.

Along the way, we misread our GPS turns and made 2 wrong turns. This added considerable time, since you just can’t turn a 40’ coach with a 20’ car anywhere, and busy cities are especially challenging. We pulled into parking lots to do this, but had to disconnect and reconnect our “toad” twice. The second parking lot was particularly tight – and we wedged ourselves in next to a building on a tight turn. This added at least another 1.5 hours to our journey, backing in and out over and over to free ourselves and avoid damage. Alas, even through our efforts, we did acquire a little bump on our coach 🙁 .

We finally arrived at Bald Ridge Creek Campground around 8pm, versus our original ETA of 2:30pm! We were exhausted!

Greg, Marcy and Joe

Greg and Lauri, our brother and sister-in-law, met us at the coach and picked us up for a very delicious dinner and a continuing celebration of Joe’s 70th Birthday. Good food and great company soon made us feel much better from a day that helped us to become much more grateful for the easier journeys.

Bald Ridge Creek Campground, developed by the Core of Engineers, is located on Lake Sidney Lanier, popular for its aqua-blue waters and spectacular scenery. Each year, over 11 million visitors travel to Lake Sidney Lanier for fantastic fishing and boating on the beautiful reservoir in northern Georgia.

Lake Sidney Lanier

Lake Sidney Lanier is nestled in the foothills of the Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains. The lake features 692 miles of shoreline and spans 38,000 surface water acres and 17,000 acres of lush terrain. The reservoir was created in 1956 with the completion of Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee River.

We were able to book “the perfect site” that was right on the lake and had the most amazing view.

Indian Seats Trail

Greg recommended that we try a beautiful hike on Sawnee Mountain and we are glad we did!

The Indian Seats Loop of the Sawnee Mountain Preserve is a moderate, breathtaking hike to an overlook of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A side trail at the highest point in the trail leads off to a wooden observation deck, plenty of rocky outcrops with their own picturesque views, and many trees to choose from for hammocking. The Indian Seats are a natural rock formation at the top of the trail system that offer beautiful views of the North Georgia mountains. Visitors can wander past abandoned gold mines and venture up the mountain on the Indian Seats Trail. This is the perfect location for photographs.

We had some BBQ with Lauri and Greg that night and said our Goodbyes. We’ll be traveling to North Carolina tomorrow.
