Harrison burg/Shenandoah Valley KOA

We set our sights on Harrisonburg, Virginia for this leg of our trip.

When planning this summer’s journey, we used www.RVTripWizard.com to help us plan our route and find campgrounds. We did lean a little toward reserving KOAs for our short stays for three reasons; 1) we are VIP Members and get discounts, 2) they are usually acceptable and convenient for big rigs, and 3) availability.

The Harrisonburg/ Shenandoah Valley KOA was a very pleasant surprise!  This KOA is truly a step above.  The design really accentuates its beautiful natural setting and we have never experienced more knowledgeable, skilled, and friendly staff than at this campground.  Everyone was so helpful, positive, and friendly!

This translates into a truly great stay!  Look this place up when you’re in this area!

Their website says, “Welcome to the Harrisonburg/ Shenandoah Valley KOA! We are located four miles directly off I-81, Exit 257. Enjoy the beautiful winding road through the countryside that brings you directly to our campground. Our very friendly staff is excited to meet you and help in any way we can in our one-of-a-kind campground that offers a variety of campsites. Trash pickup is included with your site, as well as high speed free WIFI with no passwords!”

This area of Virginia is known for it’s many caverns and we wanted to go see one. Many recommendations led us to

Shenandoah Caverns in Quicksburg, VA. We walked down the short 79 steps to the first room. There is an elevator but we decided to get a little exercise. The available areas are pretty level from that point and the paths are gravel. Without the gravel we would have had to walk in knee-deep water! Our tour guide was humorous and knowledgeable. The caverns tour consists of a one mile, one hour walk through around 17 spectacular rooms and passageways. We were amazed at the formations caused by tectonic plates and water creating the stalactites and stalagmites. We could not get over the beauty and we must have taken hundreds of photographs.

We wanted to find a great place for lunch in Harrisonburg and found The Little Grill Collective, a worker owned restaurant. They source their fresh food locally and have many vegan, vegetarian and natural meals. The restaurant only holds 49 people but that adds to the charm and ambiance. The food was great also.

After lunch Marcy wanted a pedicure and manicure. We found a little shop that was open on Sunday and even Joe had a pedicure – what a nice treat!
