July 3, 2021 – South Haven, MI

SAT, JuLY 3, 2021

We left the Ohio Turnpike and set our sites on South Haven, MI, situated on the shores of Lake Michigan between Holland and Benton Harbor is an area renowned for its blueberries and tourists.

About half way to our destination, we got a malfunction indicator (MIL) indicating we have an issue with our antifreeze level. We checked and even though it appeared okay, we added some coolant. No change in the MIL so we called Tiffin and they say we probably have a bad sensor. They recommend we change the sensor and module at one of their service center. This is not an emergency so we’ll “play by ear” hoping we can wait until we arrive in Red Bay in September. If not, we’ll find a Tiffin Service Center along the way.

We are staying at Sunny Brook RV Resort, a deeded development. This is a very nice stop on our route with many amenities. “Just minutes east of South Haven on Lake Michigan, a lakeside gem of a town, lies Sunny Brook RV Resort. Sunnybrook is an RV resort that you never really need to leave. Orlando’s usually caters food Thursday, Friday and Saturday, there’s live music and events, a general store, a library with games and more, plus two pools and even a fishing pond.

Our first night we enjoyed Orlando’s wood fired pizza and listened to a fine band playing music for all tastes. The pizza was excellent and we met a nice couple from Kalamazoo who provided us a ton of information one places to see.

On the 4th of July, we were entertained by a parade weaving it’s way around the resort. After we drove a few miles into South Haven and walked the streets looking through some of their shops. We had lunch at Clementines. Once an old bank, it is a must when in the area.

We picked this area on the recommendation of some of our MOSN neighbors and found there is much to do in southwest Michigan. We visited the towns of Saugatuck along the Kalamazoo River where we sampled offerings at The BARge , Douglas where we took a schooner tour of the Kalamazoo Lake and River out to Lake Michigan on the schooner Serenity crewed by an all women team, Holland known for its Dutch Windmill and Tulips, Kalamazoo where we found the local Trader Joe’s! We did a short hike in the Black River Preserve until the mosquitoes started carrying us away. We sampled ice cream at Sherman’s Dairy Bar where the lines are worth the wait. Established in 1916, Sherman’s serves great affordable old fashioned ice cream and is a must when in the area.

In between our gadding-about, we relaxed, did a little around-the-house (RV) stuff and played games. And we watched the Tampa Bay Lightening beat the Montreal Canadians for the Stanley Cup!

On our last night here we enjoyed Taco night with food provided again by Orlando’s Food Truck. This was a great way to end our stay!

Saturday, July 10,  we set sail in our land yacht for St. Ignace in the Mackinac area in the upper peninsula of Michigan.

Today’s Thought

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.
